Childhood memories: Thumb sucking dreams

Posted in Editorial by Nneoma Ulu on January 31, 2011

I sucked my thumb till about the age of twelve. The only reason I stopped was because my orthodontist created a brace with a contraption in it that meant I couldn’t suck my thumb and wear my brace at that same time. I don’t think I’ve yet found a replacement that is as comforting. That’s why this brings back such good memories. If I thought I could be as glamourous as this, I’d take it up again.

Scandal.

Here we go again, yet another blackface shoot. This time in Numero, featuring model, Constance Jablonski and shot by Greg Kadel. Cue obligatory backlash. The small print you may not have read – the shoot was in fact styled by Patti Wilson, ‘arguably the only black woman working as a stylist in the highest levels of fashion’, according to Vogue Black. The inspiration in her words:  “I wanted to kind of comment on what is going on now with (white celebrities) getting all of these black children, Madonna, Angelina Jolie and now Sandra Bullock. So that’s where that came from.” Got it. Nothing offensive, only creative. Social commentary via make-up and afro wigs. Hmmm…

Love, Chloe featuring Raquel Zimmerman, oh and YSL… no seriously.  Shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the latest print ad for Chloe’s new fragrance, Love, not only showcases their 70s inspired separates but also features a YSL belt. So much for carefully selected accessories. There is no doubt that someone lost their job over this. Granted it is only a rather skinny belt but apparently its only the giant billboards that feature the cock-up.  Sod’s law.
