The perfect shade of denim for summer. Boxy, oversized with the feminine cinched in waist. The right mix of boyish femininity. 3.1 Phillip Lim, thank you for the perfect summer item.

The Row A/W 2011

Posted in Autumn/Winter 2011, New York Fashion Week by Nneoma Ulu on February 15, 2011

PETA supporters look away now. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have come a long way from their TV show days with two fashion lines – The Row and Elizabeth and James – going strong. How seriously they are taken in the fashion game, I’m not sure of but their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection definitely included some stand out looks for me. It screamed luxury and sophistication with the quirkiness of the twins’ own style thrown in. Loving the burgundy lips – it’s one of those easy trends that is sure to take off in the winter months. Also loving that the flats in every look are a result of a collaboration with TOMS, resulting in cashmere styles coming in at less than $150 a pop. I’ll take a leopard print pair, thanks.

Preen A/W 2011

Posted in Autumn/Winter 2011, New York Fashion Week by Nneoma Ulu on February 15, 2011

One of my favourite shows from New York Fashion Week so far. I’m a sucker for detail and according to Style.com, the multicolored geometric-floral motif, inspired by the Northern California Arts and Crafts movement, was hand-embroidered and  block-printed onto silk. The colours are amazing and styled to perfection. Make-up is simple and just right for the colder months. Preen has my heart.

Luca Luca A/W 2011

Posted in New York Fashion Week by Nneoma Ulu on February 12, 2011

I’m desperate for colour at the moment. Bored of the greyness of outdoors and my clothes. I’ve not hidden my desire for Jil Sander and Gucci brights but now, thanks to Luca Luca’s Autumn/Winter 2011 at New York Fashion Week, I’ve found the subtle transition tones necessary to take me from Winter to Summer – for all those in-between days when it’s raining but not hard enough to warrant a brolly but enough to make your hair frizz.

It’s New York Fashion Week

Posted in New York Fashion Week by Nneoma Ulu on February 11, 2011

New York Fashion Week starts today. So here is an ode to some of the the American things I’m loving at the moment.

Here is an image from Lady Gaga’s spread for the March edition of Vogue US shot by Mario Testino. She looks great, so much softer than usual. It’s a good look. For the full spread, check it out on karlismyunkle.

Okay so this isn’t strictly American but stick with it. Alexa Chung kicked off New York Fashion Week by hosting a party for Carven designer Guillaume Henry at Barneys New York (told you there was a link). Loving her ghetto fabulous nails.

Kirsten Dunst for the latest Band of Outsiders Spring lookbook. Very cool celebrity collaboration.

Brit girls on form: Alexa Chung for Madewell

Posted in New York Fashion Week by Nneoma Ulu on February 19, 2010

New York Fashion Week is over and the fash pack have descended on Somerset House for London’s turn. Alexa Chung is the perfect crossover – a Brit making waves over the pond, showing the Yanks how things should be done.

She has teamed up with Madewell (a spin off from Michelle Obama’s favourite, J.Crew) to create a collection that is worth taking a weekend trip for.

There is something very Topshop-esque about the clothes but that doesn’t make them any less covetable. It’s the perfect wardrobe and I love everything, even down to the shoes.

The thing I love about this collection is that unlike most ‘celebrity’ collaborations, you just know that Alexa would wear these clothes herself. It totally reflects her style.

Wowed by Susan Woo

Posted in New York Fashion Week by Nneoma Ulu on February 17, 2010

I’m stuck in London, whilst New York Fashion Week is fighting off the snow and by some stroke of luck I have planted a little spy over there who is enjoying the bright lights of the city. Here is her take on Susan Woo’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection.

The intimate downtown loft space, at the Bryant Park hotel, served as the perfect back drop for the debut of the Susan Woo Fall/Winter collection this past Saturday afternoon. The clothes were gorgeous – silk crepes of cream, deep red, chocolate and coal, were draped across beautiful (but natural and healthy) looking models, placed in front of the windows like sophisticated NY Barbie dolls. But the most stand-out doll of them all was Olivia Palermo, who grazed the sidelines with a handsome, slightly scruffy, blue-eyed boy in tow. Most people at the show – the non-journalists / semi-fashionistas like me, spent more time critiquing Olivia’s biker-inspired outfit, then admiring Woo’s delicate portfolio of chic office wear that stood before us. Despite Palermo stealing some of the attention, the show was great and beautifully done. The space allowed you to view the silk and organic wool pieces up close and appreciate their simplicity and elegance. And while I’d definitely snatch up one of these numbers for work or a champagne brunch party, the first item on my ‘must have’ list is the fabulous black leather leggings adorned by ‘The City’s’ star.

At only 27, Woo’s brand philosophy epitomizes modern fashion and is a blend of high design with both environmental and social consciousness. Woo launched her collection in fall of 2009 after studying at Cornell University and developing a background with companies such as Louis Vuitton, Derek Lam, and Chanel.
