Michelle Obama, the Alexander McQueen dress and Oscar de la Renta

Posted in News by Nneoma Ulu on January 23, 2011

Michelle Obama proved herself in the style stakes pretty early on in her husband’s presidential race,  so when she stepped out in this beautiful Alexander McQueen gown for the state dinner with Chinese President Hu Jintao, it did not come as a surprise. The woman knows what suits her and dresses beautifully. What was unexpected, was the backlash…

Oscar de la Renta, who has dressed every First Lady for the past 30 years (except Mrs O) quipped: “My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?” (WWD). The claws are out! He does have a point but I guess she didn’t think she was making a political statement by stepping out in a dress that was designed by an American. I would love to hear how she would respond to Oscar.
