Spot the difference: Alexander Wang vs. TopShop

Posted in High Street Fashion by Nneoma Ulu on September 13, 2009

The beauty of the British High Street is that high fashion is no longer reserved for the rich and famous, it is accessible to everyone. In fact, every season there are a selection of must have items from the catwalk that make their way to a wardrobe near you courtesy of the “Big 3” (TopShop, H&M, Primark) amongst others. Enter TopShop’s Agressa boot. It strikes an uncanny resemblance to Alexander Wang’s Hanne Zip boots but the main difference lies in the price. At £95 the TopShop copy is a bargain in comparison to the hefty £695 price tag on the Wang boots. Personally, I’m on the fence about high street catwalk copies, I don’t mind catwalk-inspired pieces but when something is a blatant rip-off of a designer’s creativity and hard work it is a little unfair that the high street makes a slightly watered down version for the masses. But as they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… I wonder what Mr Wang thinks about that!
